Everyone has a reason to walk
When people first hear about Out of the Shadows Walk, one of the most common questions they ask is:
"Is this event only for people who have lost someone to suicide?"
The answer is simple: No.
Out of the Shadows Walk welcomes everyone.
Every year, Australians come together on or around World Suicide Prevention Day to remember those lost to suicide, support those who may be struggling, and help create a future where no one has to face their darkest moments alone.
For some participants, the walk is deeply personal. They may be remembering a family member, friend, colleague or loved one.
For others, participation is about showing support for their community, raising awareness about mental health, or helping ensure Lifeline can continue providing vital crisis support services.
Walking together for hope
One of the most powerful aspects of Out of the Shadows Walk is that it brings together people from all backgrounds and experiences.
You may be:
- Walking in memory of someone you loved.
- Walking to support a friend who has experienced loss.
- Walking because mental health matters to you.
- Walking to raise funds for Lifeline.
- Walking to help break the stigma surrounding suicide.
Whatever your reason, your participation matters.
Every step starts a conversation. Conversations can save lives.
By registering and sharing your involvement, you're helping raise awareness of an issue that affects families, workplaces and communities right across Australia.
Sometimes the simple act of talking openly about mental health can encourage someone to seek support when they need it most.
