One of the biggest misconceptions about Out of the Shadows Walk

Many people assume they need to complete the full 9km distance to participate.

The truth is that Out of the Shadows Walk is about much more than the number of kilometres you walk.

It's about connection, remembrance, hope and support.

That's why participants are welcome to choose their own distance target and accessible location.

Why 9km?

The traditional 9km distance reflects the devastating reality that, on average, nine Australians lose their lives to suicide every day.

While many participants choose to walk 9km to honour this symbolism, it's not a requirement.

Your walk, your way

You might choose to:

  • Set your own target, something manageable or meaningful to you.
  • Complete the full 9km.
  • Take on the week-long challenge 63km (9km a day on average).
  • Spread your distance target across multiple walks.

The important thing is participating in a way that feels comfortable and meaningful for you.

Accessibility matters

We know that every participant has different circumstances, abilities and health considerations.

Whether you're pushing a pram, walking with children, using mobility aids, recovering from injury or simply building up your fitness, there is a place for you in this event.

Out of the Shadows Walk is designed to be inclusive and accessible.

Every step helps create change

When you register, share your story or raise funds, you're helping raise awareness of suicide prevention and supporting Lifeline's work providing crisis support to Australians in need.

No distance is too small.

Every step taken in support of hope, connection and remembrance matters.
