Losing a loved one is an incredibly challenging experience, and the pain can feel insurmountable when we lose someone to suicide. Bereavement by suicide can impact us in different ways, affecting our physical and mental health. At SOS (Bereavement Support Group), we understand the unique difficulties of suicide bereavement. Our mission is to provide a safe, supportive space for individuals who have lost someone to suicide to connect with others who share their experiences.

You Are Not Alone

When someone dies by suicide, the bereaved often experience complicated grief caused by a combination of feelings, thoughts, and behaviours. Grief is unique to each individual, and it is essential to acknowledge and process all the reactions that come with this complex loss. We want to reassure you that you are not alone in your journey.

Friends, family, and even the wider community may not always react or respond similarly after a suicide loss, leaving the bereaved feeling isolated or shamed. We want to create a supportive community where you can find understanding, compassion, and acceptance.

Embracing Your Feelings and Finding Support

Processing the grief after losing someone to suicide takes time, and each person copes in their own way. It is crucial to accept and embrace your feelings during this process. You may experience a range of emotions, such as grief, despair, anger, guilt, denial, shock, confusion, loneliness, anxiety, and even relief. Remember, all feelings are a normal part of the grieving process.

Taking care of yourself both physically and emotionally is essential. Eating well, staying hydrated, exercising, and getting quality sleep can help you navigate through each day. It's important to stay connected with your support networks of friends, family, and others who understand your journey.

Honouring your loved one can bring comfort and healing. Talking about them, sharing memories and photos, and engaging in spiritual or cultural activities that are meaningful to you can be part of the healing process.

Join Our SOS (Bereavement Support Group)

In addition to seeking support from friends and family, joining a suicide bereavement group can provide immense comfort and understanding. Connecting with others who have experienced a similar loss can help you feel less alone on your healing journey.

At SOS (Bereavement Support Group), we offer monthly support groups for suicide survivors in Newcastle, Maitland, and the Central Coast. Led by compassionate facilitators, our support group provides a judgment-free zone where you can express your feelings openly and safely. By sharing your experiences and listening to others, you can find solace, validation, and a sense of connectedness.
